Before you borrow, a few of these steps might close the gap on their own.

A cash gap in the days before payday is one of the most common financial stresses — and one of the most fixable, if you act early. Before turning to a short-term loan, run through these five steps. None of them require a lender, and several take less than an hour.
1. Call your billers before the due date, not after
Utility companies, phone carriers, and even landlords frequently offer short hardship extensions or split payments — but usually only if you ask before the bill is late. A five-minute call explaining your situation can move a due date by a week or more at no cost, which may be all the breathing room you need.
2. Audit subscriptions and recurring charges
Streaming services, app subscriptions, and "free trials" that converted to paid plans quietly drain \$20–\$80 a month for many households. Pull up your last bank statement and cancel anything you haven't actively used in 60 days. This won't solve today's gap, but combined with the steps below it adds up quickly.
3. Sell what you're not using
Local marketplace apps make it realistic to turn unused electronics, tools, or furniture into cash within 24–48 hours. It's not glamorous, but for a genuinely short-term need, converting idle items into cash is typically far cheaper than borrowing.
4. Ask about an early or partial paycheck
Many employers, especially larger ones, offer an earned-wage-access benefit or will process an off-cycle partial paycheck for hardship situations. HR or payroll can tell you in one conversation whether this is available — and if it is, it's usually free or very low-cost.
5. Tap a no-interest safety net first
If you have any of the following available, they are almost always cheaper than a short-term loan: a 0% introductory-APR credit card with room left on it, a family loan with clear repayment terms written down, or a local mutual-aid or community fund. Compare the cost of each against the representative APR examples on our Rates & Fees page before deciding.
