We built this page because we believe informed borrowers make better decisions. A payday-style loan can be a reasonable tool for a genuine, one-time, short-term gap — but it is rarely the cheapest option, and it is a poor fit for recurring expenses or long-term financial strain.

Questions to ask yourself first

  • Is this a one-time gap, or a pattern? If you've needed a short-term loan several months in a row, the underlying issue is usually a budget gap that a loan will not fix, and may worsen through added fees.
  • Can I realistically repay in full on the due date? If repaying the loan would leave you unable to cover rent, utilities, or food, the loan is likely to create a bigger problem than it solves.
  • Have I compared the total cost against alternatives? See the comparison list below before you commit.

Lower-cost alternatives worth considering

Payment plans with the biller

Utility companies, hospitals, and many landlords offer hardship payment plans, often with no interest, if you call before the due date.

Employer pay advances

Some employers offer an advance on earned wages, sometimes at no cost, as an alternative to third-party lending.

Credit union small-dollar loans

Many federal credit unions offer "PALs" (Payday Alternative Loans) capped around 28% APR — a fraction of a typical payday loan's cost.

Local charitable & community assistance

Community action agencies, religious organizations, and local charities often provide one-time emergency assistance for rent, utilities, or food.

Free, non-profit resources

ResourceWhat it offers
